Dear Mr. Robinson:
I have looked at the proposal by Murphy and Miller, and it
looks entirely feasible for a minimal TEX system assuming that the
cost of interfacing the Canon Laser Printer to the computer is
covered in the cost estimate.
It should result in high quality report documents, since the
Canon produces output of considerably higher quality than the printer
that produced this letter.
The virtues of TEX are indeed as claimed, and the fact that
it has been adopted by the American Mathematical Society provides
assurance that it will be further developed to meet the requirements
of all kinds of mathematical publishing.
The investigators
seem competent to do the work. A lot depends on whether they
can hire and train a research assistant with the necessary versatile
software and hardware competence, although this task will
be eased if the computer facility has some hardware
competence and makes it available.
